Nancy L. W. Spaeth, artist and volunteer

Nancy Louise Wiltbank Spaeth, 95, formerly of Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill, an artist and community volunteer, died June 27 at Cathedral Village in Andorra, where she had been living for the past 23 years.

Mrs. Spaeth was the widow of Judge Edmund B. Spaeth Jr, a former president judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court who died on March 31.

She was a volunteer at Prints in Progress in Germantown and at Stenton Mansion while her children were growing up. She also taught nursery school when she lived for a time in Bethesda, Md.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a graduate of Germantown Friends School and Wellesley College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in botany. She studied French extensively throughout her life, as well as art history and studio art, and took studio art classes at the Woodmere Art Museum, the Allens Lane Art Center and at the Conshohocken and Greater Norristown Art Leagues.

She was especially proficient in watercolors and pastels.

She was a member of the Colonial Dames, the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mrs. Spaeth is survived by a son, Edmund B. Spaeth III; daughters Eleanor Lee Simons and Suzanne Marinell; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Barbara Allen, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 630 E. Cathedral Road, in the Andorra section of Philadelphia.
