Bailey Smith passed away peacefully in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 6, 2016 at the age of 84 after a courageous battle with cancer.  Born March 15, 1932 in Glendale, NY, he was the son of Richard Smith Sr. and Anna Bailey Smith.  He attended Buckley Country Day School, Green Vale School and The Hotchkiss School (class of ’50) before attending Cornell University. He was a proud member of the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in 1954.  Upon graduating, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed for part of his enlistment in San Salvador, Bahamas. It is here that his love for the islands of the Bahamas was born and he still maintained relationships with those he met then until his death. After serving in the Navy, he worked in finance in New York City, at the firms Hoppin Watson and Wertheim Schroeder.  In 1961 he married Elinor Ruth Hagemann with whom he had three children; J. Bailey, Anne “Bee” Townley, and Scott Wallace. While he was married to Elinor, the family divided their time between New York City and East Hampton, where they held a membership at the Maidstone Club. He instilled in his family a love of tennis, the sea, and the New York Rangers. In 1983, he married Rosemary Herrick Jackson and they moved aboard their boat, a 49′ Grand Banks, ‘Quickstep’ and travelled the US and Bahamas. In 1997 he married Carol Lorraine Minns living at their home “Madeira” in Georgetown, Great Exuma, Bahamas. They travelled extensively throughout Central and South America. He was an avid birdwatcher and it was during his time living in the Bahamas that he developed a talent and love for woodcarving. He was loved and will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched.  Bailey is survived by his wife, Carol Lorraine Minns of Great Exuma, children J. Bailey (and Trudi Green) Smith of Wyndmoor, PA, Bee Smith of Wilmington, NC, and Scott (and Erica Broberg) Smith of Fairhaven NJ, stepson Matthew (and Samantha) Lee of Washington, DC, grandchildren Delaney Hunter Townley Duke, Georgianna Allen Duke, Taylor Bailey Smith, Kyle King Smith, Kyra Francesca Smith, and Wyatt Allen Smith, brother Richard “Dick” (and LaLitte) Smith of East Hampton, nephews Richard Wallace Smith III of California, Bruce Bailey Smith of Vermont, previous wives Elinor Hageman Smith of New York, NY, Rosemary Herrick Jackson of Zirconia, NC. Memorial services will be held at a future date, both in the Bahamas and on eastern Long Island.
